FAQ for New Hikers

⭐ Do I need to be an experienced hiker to join?

Not necessarily. New hikers are welcome, but it’s important to know that Moncton Outdoor Enthusiasts is primarily made up of seasoned hikers who move at a fast, steady pace. If you’re new to hiking or building your fitness, we recommend starting with an Easy hike to get comfortable with our style and trail conditions.

⭐ How fast is the group’s pace?

Our members enjoy covering ground efficiently. Even on rugged or technical terrain, the pace is generally brisk with limited breaks. If you’re unsure whether you can maintain the pace, choose an Easy hike first or contact the hike leader for guidance.

⭐ How do you define Easy, Moderate, and Strenuous?

These categories reflect distance, elevation, terrain, and the pace we maintain:

•             Easy: Shorter distances, mild elevation, natural terrain

•             Moderate: Longer distances, steeper climbs, more technical footing

•             Strenuous: Significant elevation gain, rugged terrain, sustained effort

Even “Easy” hikes may feel challenging if you’re new to hiking.

⭐ What should I bring on a hike?

At minimum:

•             Sturdy footwear

•             Weather‑appropriate clothing

•             Water (enough for the full outing)

•             Snacks

•             Any personal medications

•             A small backpack

For longer or strenuous hikes, consider bringing extra layers, trekking poles, and additional water.

⭐ How do I know if a hike is right for me?

Consider:

•             Your recent hiking experience

•             Your comfort with distance, elevation, and rugged terrain

•             Your ability to maintain a steady group pace

If you’re unsure, reach out to the hike leader—they can help you decide.

⭐ What happens if I can’t keep up?

Our hikes move as a group for safety reasons. If you’re concerned about pace, start with an Easy outing or speak with the hike leader beforehand. Choosing the right difficulty level helps ensure a positive experience for everyone.

⭐ Can I bring my dog?

Some hikes allow dogs and others do not. Check the event description for each outing. When dogs are permitted, they must be well‑behaved, under control, and follow all trail rules.

⭐ What if the weather is bad?

Hikes may be modified, postponed, or cancelled depending on conditions. Check the event listing for updates, and make sure you’re prepared for typical New Brunswick weather—conditions can change quickly.

⭐ Do I need to pre-register for hikes?

No. However, you will need to sign a sign in sheet circulated by the hike leader before the hike to sign in and provide emergency contact information.

⭐ Who leads the hikes?

Our hikes are led by MOE volunteers who know the trails. They’re happy to answer questions and help you choose the right outing.
